Exciting new promotion for Thomas Jackson
This week we interviewed Thomas Jackson who has recently been promoted from Assistive Technology Trainer to Lead Trainer. We asked Thomas what his new job role entailed; how the training department implements shared learning to support business growth and what are the top questions that students ask about training.
Managing trainer training
“I have been with Remtek Systems Ltd for 10 years, starting as a set-up engineer. For the past 7 years I have been an Assistive Technology trainer; training students on all of the software provided through the DSA. More recently I have been promoted to Lead Trainer at Remtek Systems Ltd to help cohesion between our trainers; whether working from home or in the workplace. Being a Lead Trainer gives the Assistive Technology trainers a point of contact for their queries or issues; but I am also there to help look after the trainers and make sure that all training runs smoothly. I also help with onboarding new AT trainers to support business growth on the training side of the business. For this, I have recently written a training curriculum to be followed by new employees; to assist them in becoming a Remtek AT trainer and ensuring they have a full working knowledge of the software.
At Remtek Systems Ltd we pride ourselves in how our bespoke training has enabled students to get the most out of their software and we want every student that we train to feel supported and looked after. To help with this I have created a training form for each of our trainers to use with their students so that we can highlight key areas where the software will assist the student. I ensure that this is used by all trainers and make sure that every student gets the same level of care and training.
As the training Team Leader, I make sure that there is a good level of communication between the trainers and the other areas of the company so that everyone understands our goals and objectives. This helps for team building within the company across all departments.”
Weekly meetings - shared learning - constant communication
“A new initiative that we have introduced as part of our weekly work schedule is a “coffee morning”. This is held every Monday before we start training and promotes shared learning. The coffee mornings give trainers the time to share recent resources, tips, or useful information about software updates or changes. This has been a big benefit to productivity and aids our trainers assisting the students more efficiently. Our weekly meetings open conversations between our trainers to enable constant communication and is coupled with our Microsoft Teams groups so that questions or issues can be answered quickly throughout the workday.”
Supporting the quote side of the business
“As the Lead Trainer at Remtek Systems Ltd I help with queries from all areas of Remtek to do with training or with questions about software and how training takes place.
We can receive questions from within the company or externally that need to be answered to provide a better understanding of training in general; the training procedure or software. As the main point of contact I reply to all of these queries ensuring that everyone has the correct and most up-to-date information.
What software is used for online training?
We use a meeting software called Cisco Webex Meetings. This can be downloaded onto your computer once you receive your first training meeting email. This software allows us the ability to record the sessions, so the student always has the ability to watch the session back.
Can the training sessions be recorded?
Yes, the training sessions can be screen recorded and there is also the option for closed captions to be used if needed.
How do I access a recorded session?
The recorded session will be sent to you via email by your trainer. There will be a link and a passcode needed to access the recording.
How do I join a training meeting?
The email sent to you via your trainer will have a green button that will say join meeting. This will then ask you to join via browser or download the Cisco software.
What do I use to join the meeting?
You will need to join the meeting on the computer system that has the software installed or the intended computer system for the software to be installed upon.

Managing trainer training and their certificates
“As well as being a point of contact for all trainers at Remtek Systems Ltd I also ensure that our trainers are up to date with their continual professional development certificates (CPD’S).
Each trainer is required to have a CPD to show that they have been taught how to use and how to train on each piece of software given out within the DSA. As the Lead Trainer I am in communication with the software companies to book webinars for our trainers to gain CPD’s and I also make sure that each trainer is up to date with their CPD’s. This allows our trainers to train at the highest standard and understand new software, or updated software as soon as possible.
When new software is noticed or even software that has not been seen by a trainer for a while is noticed, I am informed by the trainer so that I can request a webinar and a copy of the software for all trainers.”

“Recently I have been lucky enough to be invited to the hearing awareness skill session hosted by CareScribe. This event was amazing to attend and really helped me to understand the different levels of hearing issues and how these can be combated through training, software and hardware.
We have also attended the most recent CPD revolution which provided useful insights on inclusion and accessibility.”
